A new center is emerging around the old fire watchtower at the edge of the Neuwerk campus: a place for events, a spot where one can find tranquility, where eyes are drawn upwards, and creativity is in the air. It replaces the parking lot and the old, dilapidated garages, integrating the narrow green strip along the new flood protection wall. Similar to a three-sided courtyard, the Saale Cube, the workshop building, and the print shop form the edge of the square, which now connects them. Around the tower, an oval stage is arranged. Opposite, in front of the metal workshop, terraces are created where craft work can be performed and which can become seating areas during events. The square is segmented, similar to its expansive counterpart in Siena, into porphyry sections that slope gently from the corners of the involved buildings towards the tower and the stage. This creates a good field of view and a unique sense of place: one is almost magically drawn to the center of the action.
